Barkindji Biosphere has critical conservation objectives, covering both riverine and semi-arid areas. These areas include both intact and degraded land, and riverine environments. The habitats of some rare and endangered species have been affected adversely by the exclusion of the Murray River from some wetland areas or from persistent inundation of others, and by salinity problems relating to the changed watertable due to irrigation. In addition to flora and fauna conservation, the site contains unique geological and archaeological formations and remains, and is of great value due to its Aboriginal cultural heritage.
