The following rare and endangered species are of conservation significance.

Flora

The Barkindji Biosphere area has recorded sightings of the following threatened plant species:

  • Saline area saltbush (Atriplex papillata)
  • Old man saltbush (Atriplex numalaria).

The area contains threatened plant habitats for the following species:

  • Nulla nulla (Astrostipa nullanulla)
  • Bitter quandong (Santalum murrayanum).

Several isolated patches of Mulga (Acacia aneura) and Nelia (Acacia loderi) occur, which are on the southern limit of their natural distribution. In addition, there are 3,500 year old Mallee lignotubers, 800 year old river red gums and intact red gum and box forests within the Biosphere Reserve.
