Barkindji Biosphere is in the process of nominating to become part
of UNESCO's Man
and the Biosphere Program. Biosphere Reserves are areas of terrestrial
and coastal ecosystems promoting solutions to reconcile the conservation
of biodiversity with its sustainable use.They serve in some ways as
'living laboratories' for testing and demonstrating integrated management
of land, water and biodiversity. They are internationally recognised
by UNESCO following nomination by national governments, and remain under
sovereign jurisdiction of the state where they are located.
