"Importance of the Murray recognised"

JOANNE SHOEBRIDGE: Last month, Australia's iconic Murray River gained even greater international recognition when a vast tract of the river and its surrounds were proclaimed a biosphere by the United Nations. A biosphere recognises unique natural and cultural values, and in terms of importance ranks second only to a World Heritage listing. The listing, along a stretch of the Murray River surrounding the city of Mildura, has wide community, landholder and scientific support as well as endorsement from the Federal Government. But, strangely, the Victorian Government is still to grant approval for the land on its side of the border.
