The Barkindji Biosphere is the initiative of a partnership of not-for-profit organisations specialising in conservation, research and education. Important links are being made with government agencies in both Victoria and New South Wales with responsibility for environmental planning and sustainable development. The designation of the Barkindji Biosphere will in many ways support the strategic objectives of the Mallee Catchment Management Authority, the Lower Murray Catchment Management Board and the Murray Darling Basin Commission, and policy directions of the Commonwealth, New South Wales and Victorian governments in relation to protecting biodiversity and developing sustainable communities. The Australian Inland Botanic Gardens Inc. was established in 1984 as a community organisation with 400 members and 60 very active volunteers. The AIBG has demonstrated a can-do attitude that will be emulated in developing the Biosphere Reserve. It is envisaged that a division of the AIBG will support the coordinating body for the Biosphere Reserve, which will take advice from a small, skills-based Advisory Board drawn from the partner organisations and other experts. |
